Guru Nanak Dev Ji, First Sikh guru took birth in the year 1469 for the sake of people. The Birthday of Guru Nanak Sahib is celebrated on 15th Kartik Puranmashi i.e. full moon day of the month Kartik. It is said whenever there is a decay of Dharma (righteousness) and an ascendancy of unrighteousness, God manifest himself for the protection of virtuous and destruction of the vicious and so came Gurunanak Dev Ji. He was born in Talwandi (Nankana Sahib) in a hindu family. Son of Mata Tripta and Mehta Kalu Ji came for the welfare of human beings. Blessed is the land and are the countrymen where this jewel was born and bought up. Brother of Nanki Ji was so attached to her that he left his parents at an early age and started living with her sister after her marriage. Was married to Sulakhani Devi Ji in 1487 and was father of two sons Shri Chand and Lakhmidas.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji has been documented to have travelled across India to spread his message of universal equality. He worked to improve the respect of women by spreading his message: "From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married. Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come. When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound. So why call her bad? From her, kings are born. From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all. He was a great personage who gave a new direction of life.
He laid forth few principles by which every human being should abide;
1. Remember the name of God at all times: God is conceived as the Supreme Being, creator and sustainer of the universe. His name should always be in our minds as he only teach a moral code of love, forgiveness, helping others, charity, contentment and inner peace.
2. Earn an honest living as a householder: There should be no exploitation of the poor by the rich. All must labor and must sweat to create the foodstuffs. This would eliminate poverty. The human body should be working for the well-being of the family and society but the mind has to remain tuned towards God. All are required to do an honest living through truthful means and live the life of a householder.
3. Share a portion of your earnings with the less fortunate: He always insisted on sharing the earnings with the people who are not that fortunate to earn their living well for their personal and social development. Those who feed the poor and hungry are in a way please God with this deed.
